Derek Beatty attended the launch of the Diabetes Dialogue report: Living with Diabetes in the UK. The report is the result of a seven week online consultation on diabetes services initiated by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Diabetes, sanofi-aventis and the Hansard Society.

Over 350 people took part in the consultation, providing a real insight into diabetes care and services. Participants included patients - the youngest just eleven years old - , their families, healthcare professionals and diabetes experts, all sharing their experiences of diabetes services across the UK. The result is a grassroots insight into diabetes services, showing what works and where improvements still need to be made in line with the aims of the Diabetes National Service Framework.

Key recommendations of the report are:

-Continuing the implementation of the National Service Framework throughout all diabetes services

-Encouraging blood glucose testing eg HbA1c levels, to check for optimal long-term control

-Provisions of comprehensive educational services to empower patients to take full control of their diabetes
